Audition #10 – Sylvia at Big Top Theatre

There was only one guy who auditioned on Sunday. And by phone calls, the director was only able to get two more guys to audition. Out of three guys, the director has to fill two positions. That has to be tough. I know it sounds easy: pick two, toss the third. But it is not easy building a solid, compatible cast out of so few people. None of the guys may be suitable and then what do you do.

I auditioned for the role of GREG. GREG finds SYLVIA in the park and brings here home. The audition went well enough from my perspective. But do I want to land a role by default? Well, I was given a role in The Sunshine Boys. But it was a very very small role and the director could have said no. The director of Sylvia could do the same, call for more auditions or cancel the play all together.

But what am I worried about here. That I might be in a bad production? Am I being arrogant? Creative Differences with the director? Obviously I have some reservations, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe I am worried from a directorial perspective.

From what little I know about Sylvia, it is a cute play, very funny. I would like to read the script even if I do not get a part.

Audition Notice: Sylvia – Update

I know I was late on posting the audition notice for Sylvia, but I was not planning on going to this audition. I received a call today from the director David Kronawitter. He left me a message on my phone asking if I would audition tonight. I had auditioned for David for Neil Simon’s Fools a few months back. He found my headshot and, I believe, he is calling people to fill still open roles.

We shall see what happens.

Audition #9: Beau Jest

Or at least I think it’s my ninth.

The audition went well last night. The audition itself was the second I have done where the cold readings are done in front of everybody, all the other audition-ers. The only other time I did this type of audition was for a slapstick-style play? and well we know how I feel about those.

But the play is good, lots of humor. I read for all male parts including ABE which is the father. In one of the readings I had 3 paragraphs of Yiddish to read? so? I read it, slaughtering the language as I went. Oh and to add to that, imagine a Blond Haired, Blue Eyed person trying to act Jewish.

Last Three Auditions – #6 – #8

OK, so I have been lazy, but it has been the holidays as well. I have been to 3 auditions, none of which I landed a role. Two were slapstick-type-rapid-fire comedies. Those of you who know me would think “Jay should be good at that”. Well I am not good at that. Oh, I can be funny, witty, whatever, but at my own time and pace. Comedy requires a timing that I don’t think I have. At least I was not comfortable at doing slapstick comedies. Now comedies where I deliver straight lines that are humorous, I am comfortable doing.

The third audition was for Deathtrap at Stage Door Players. This was also my third audition for Robert Egizio. I thought the first role I read for I did very well on. The problem with the last statement is that I never have received feedback from the person handling the auditions, be that the director or somebody else. So I think I did well. Even if I did, I might not have been right for the part.

It’s easy to get discouraged, having been to 8 or so auditions, not being picked for any, and the one play I was in was given to me by a friend. Well I am. We will see how the next auditions go. Tonight is Beau Jest.
