For five millennia Harry Blackpool has been the agent for all Evil on Earth, while Rachel Parrish has represented Good. These implacable foes meet in a private club every twenty five years. With the end of the world scheduled for tomorrow at teatime, they must pass their duties to their oblivious heirs: a mild mannered physical education teacher and an aggressively Bohemian artist.

Harry Blackpool – The agent of all Evil on Earth. Of an uncertain age, somewhere between forty-five and a thousand. Exudes the attitude of an untrustworthy banker or politician; sardonic, playful, cynical and sincere.

Rachel Parrish – The agent of all Good on Earth. Of the same indeterminate age as Harry, but that’s where similarities end. Reminds one of a private girls’ schoolteacher or a head nurse; calm and self-assured but with a controlled sense of playfulness.

Timothy Page – The manager of a private club, which means he is a combination housekeeper, butler, occupant and business manager. Still in his early thirties, but he is a competent employee and determined to impress.

Adam Blackpool – Harry’s son. Twenty-five years old, trim and athletic. He is a junior high school gym teacher, but he doesn’t seem to be the embodiment of all Evil, as his father suggests.

Tiffany Parrish – Rachel’s daughter. Also twenty-five years old, she is an artist of the bohemian persuasion. Speaks with a Cockney accent. Not necessarily the embodiment of all Good, as her mother suggests.

Synopsis of Play:
The play is based on the book of the same name, which was written in 1983 by Susan Hill. It is notable for only having two actors perform the whole play. The plot remains faithful to Hill’s book, but adds an extra dimension of a play within a play. The book follows the story of Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, as he journeys to the small market town of Crythin Gifford to attend the funeral of a client, Mrs Alice Drablow. At the funeral, he sees a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black, standing in the churchyard. Bemused by the villagers’ reluctance to speak of the woman in black, Arthur goes to Eel Marsh House, Mrs. Drablow’s former abode, an old building in the middle of a marsh cut off at high tide. Sorting through Mrs Drablow’s papers, he finds a box of letters, and ultimately discovers the dreadful secret of the Woman in Black – to his own terrible cost.

Roles:
Kipps – late 20’s/early 30’s man
Actor – 40’s-50’s man
