Audition Notice: Don’t Dress for Dinner

STAGE DOOR PLAYERS will hold professional Non-Equity auditions for the comedy/farce, Don’t Dress For Dinner by Robin Hawdon on Monday, June 2 and Tuesday June 3, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the theatre. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Please bring headshot and resume. No appointment required. Casting three women, and three men.

Bernard; 35 – mid 40’s
Jacqueline, his wife, 35 – mid 40’s
Robert, his friend, 35 – mid 40’s
Suzanne, his mistress, mid 30’s
Suzette, the cook, 20-30’s
George, her husband, 20-30’s

Bernard is planning a weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in a French farmhouse. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, is packing his wife Jacqueline off to her mother’s, and has even invited his best friend to provide the alibi. It’s foolproof; what could possibly go wrong? Suppose Robert turns up not knowing why he has been invited? Suppose that Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers? Suppose the cook is mistaken for the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook? A farcical evening of hilarious confusion ensues.

Show will begin rehearsals mid to late August for a September 25, 2008 opening and will run for four weekends. Performance times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM, and Sunday afternoons at 2:30.

Update for the week of May 20, 2008

Lots of stuff going on:

1. Losing my job

2. website updates

3. rehearsals start soon

4. New headshots posted

5. Miscellany

OK, last Wednesday, I received notice from HR and my manager that I was 1 of 18 people part of a “reduction in staff”. If you don’t know, I am employed by Northrup Grumman, working on a CDC contract. The contract was cut about $5.5 million. Today alone I have 3 interviews. IT pays the bills so I can act. Although, I wish acting would pay the bills.

There have been 2 website updates lately. Version 3 of this site was rather bland (red borders, black background, off white text). Version 4 was released last week. It was my first attempt at a graphics heavy site. It looked great, but the images were too large in bytes and so took a long while to download. That would not do. So 4.1 is up with smaller graphics. Victorian style with future modifications to make it look Steampunk. It’s an OK looking site. I hope the tweaks will improve the look and texture. And what’s with the chairs in the left sidebar? I guess it’s better than blank space. There are a few defects that I need to fix as well.

Barefoot in the Park rehersals start on June 9th. This is my first adventure into a paying theatre. We received the scripts a couple of weeks ago and because I don’t have a very large role (10 pages in Act I and Act III), I should have it easily memorized before June 9th.

New headshots are posted on the Portfolio page. The pictures were done by Milestone Photography. They did a great job. It’s amazing how much different I look from my previous photos. I am planning on sending a mass mailing out with my new and old headshot to theaters and agents. And yes I am letting my hair grow back.

I never heard back from my audition for Madea Goes to Jail and the majority of the time you will never hear from an audition unless they want you. I did receive an email from Sally Ann Cone on my audition for An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein. It was an email to all those who auditioned and did not get a part, which was less than 10 people. That was very nice.

Audition Notice: An Adult Evening With Shel Silverstein

Relapse Theatre held auditions this past Saturday night, but I was unable to attend. Also the run dates had not been finalized. All that was mentioned was the end of July. Barefoot in the Park runs in July. The dates for this show start the very next weekend after Barefoot. Show times for Barefoot are also on Thursday night. I may have too many conflicts for rehearsals. We shall see.

They have added another audition date: “We added another day for auditions due to an overwhelming display of interest.”

An Adult Evening With Shel Silverstein by Shel Silverstein

Welcome to the darkly comic world of Shel Silverstein, a world where nothing is as it seems and where the most innocent conversation can turn menacing in an instant. The ten imaginative plays in this collection range widely in content, but the style is unmistakable.

Directed by Sally Ann Cone

Audition: Saturday, May 10th, 7:00 to 9:00 PM

Cast: 8 total (M or W)

Show Dates: July 31, August 1,7,8,14,15,17

Location: 380 14th Street, Atlanta, Georgia

This is a cold read audition. All roles are nonpaid. If you are unable to attend the allotted time for auditions contact Sally Ann Cone to make arrangements.

Auditioned for Madea Goes to Jail

I don’t think it went very well. I have always had trouble changing inflections on demand. The audition notes stated that the OFFICER should be authoritative which is what I had in mind when memorizing the lines and practicing. With Alpha Tyler, she asked that the lines be dripping with sarcasm.  The police have been trying to arrest MADEA for a while and now have her in custody. I just have trouble changing my tone. I need to work on that.

On the other hand, working with Alpha Tyler was great. She was friendly and talkative, which made it easy for me to relax. I hope that working with casting directors like Alpha is the rule, not the exception.

A Movie Audition

I have a movie audition with Tyler Perry Studios on Tuesday morning. This is the first result of doing the Atlanta Unfieds a few weeks ago. They are starting production on a new movie, Madea Goes to Jail, due out in the fall. I am reading for the part of ether OFFICER or OFFICER #2.

This is very exciting for several reasons: First the Unifieds were a success for me. Second, hopefully this will lead to more movies and TV. Of course, auditions do not mean a role in the movie, but I can dream.
